Yahoo Sports Report: Georgia QB D'Wan Mathis has cyst removed from brain
Georgia quarterback D’Wan Mathis reportedly had surgery Thursday to remove a cyst from his brain.
Per UGASports.com, Mathis had been experiencing headaches recently. His father told DawgNation.com that his son was doing well after the surgery to remove the cyst and would be back “better than ever.”
“I want everyone to know my son is OK and will be back better than ever because of Coach (Kirby) Smart and the University of Georgia medical staff and coaching staff,” Terence Mathis told DawgNation on Thursday night.
“The procedure today was a success, and I want to thank Coach Smart and Georgia for the way they treated my son and my family through all of this. Coach (James) Coley is at the hospital with my son right now, in fact.”
Mathis’ father also told the site that there would be a followup procedure.
Mathis was originally committed to Ohio State
Mathis, a member of the high school class of 2019, was originally committed to Ohio State. But as Ohio State experienced significant QB turnover — Tate Martell transferred to Miami after Justin Fields transferred from Georgia to the Buckeyes — Mathis flipped to Georgia on signing day. Rivals ranked Mathis as a four-star QB and the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2019.
With Jake Fromm entrenched as the team’s starter, Mathis is set to serve as a backup in 2019.
