Report: Chip Kelly turned down overture from Tennessee
It’s pretty safe to say Jon Gruden won’t be the next coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. And it seems safe to also say it won’t be Chip Kelly either.
According to USA Today, Kelly “turned down a recent offer from Tennessee.” And, per the source noted in the article, Kelly is “also believed to have turned away interest from Nebraska.”
For what it’s worth, Nebraska is an Adidas school. Florida is a Nike school. Kelly, as you know, coached at Oregon, the alma mater of Nike founder Phil Knight.
Kelly is reportedly interested in both the Gators and UCLA, which fired Jim Mora on Sunday night. Yahoo Sports’ Pat Forde reported that Florida is planning to widen its search past Kelly after meeting with the coach on Sunday night. Per the USA Today report, a “potential sticking point” could be the Bruins’ deal with Under Armour.
Kelly compiled a 46-7 record in four seasons at Oregon.
Tennessee fired coach Butch Jones after a Week 11 loss to Missouri. Nebraska has not parted ways with coach Mike Riley, who is in his third season with the team. Nebraska, at 4-7, will miss a bowl game no matter what happens against Iowa on Friday.
The Volunteers have been connected to Gruden, the former NFL coach, by numerous zealous fans. But Gruden makes millions to analyze football for ESPN. It’s a better gig than a college coach.
According to a report Tuesday, Texas A&M will also be looking for a new coach after the season. Per the Houston Chronicle, the team is expected to fire Kevin Sumlin after the Aggies’ game vs. LSU.
