Report: Chiefs' Eric Berry could return to practice this week
The undefeated Kansas City Chiefs could get a needed boost on defense soon.
Veteran safety Eric Berry could return to practice this week, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The All-Pro has been rehabbing a sore heel since August and missed the team’s first two games of the season, though the Chiefs went 2-0 in his absence.
Berry returning from ruptured Achilles
Berry, a nine-year veteran of the league, hasn’t played since the 2017 season opener. He left during the fourth quarter of the team’s 42-27 victory over the New England Patriots with a ruptured left Achilles. He missed the rest of the season.
It’s his right heel that’s bothered him in camp this season. He was also bothered by the right heel last year during training camp and missed time during the 2014 training camp with heel issues.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told the CBS sideline reporter Sunday that Berry will hopefully return within the next two weeks.
CBS sideline reporter Evan Washburn says #Chiefs hopeful they'll see S Eric Berry on the field "in the next two weeks." That's more direct than we've heard from Andy Reid locally but consistent with the team's actions.

Berry is the highest paid safety in the NFL, a title he also held last season. He won the 2015 AP Comeback Player of the Year award after going through chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Chiefs winning with shootouts
The Chiefs are 2-0 with wins over the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers thanks to their offense, led by second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He had four touchdowns in a 38-28 week 1 win over the Chargers and threw six in a 42-37 win over the Steelers. That’s an NFL record 10 in a single player’s first two games of the season.

It’s gotten the job done so far, but the Chiefs will need some defensive help to ensure the wins keep coming. Opponents have a combined more first downs, offensive yards (1,032 to 815) and passing yards (876-582) than the Chiefs.
They’ll host the San Francisco 49ers in week 3.
