Yahoo Sports Reese Witherspoon highlights young author Leah Johnson whose latest title is a ‘love letter to Black girls’

Celebrity book clubs have, in recent memory, become a running trend in Hollywood. However, as with any trend, the same execution isn't applied across the board. Reese Witherspoon, in particular, has set herself apart from the rest, with her venture into the book curation space proving to be one of diversity and positivity. Her first-ever pick for the Young Adults series in her book club proves just that.
The Academy Award-winning actress and activist chose Leah Johnson's "You Should See Me In A Crown" as the Young Adults book to read. Even more impressively, Johnson wrote a piece on Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine website detailing her inspiration behind the title, sharing that it is a "love letter to Black girls."

"I didn't see many characters who looked like me or had problems like mine, especially not in romantic comedies," Johnson wrote.
The young author, who received her MFA in fiction writing, shared that "You Should See Me in a Crown" is a story "about Liz Lightly, a Black girl from a small Midwestern town who, despite mastering the art of being a wallflower, must run from prom queen to win a scholarship to attend her dream college."
Through this journey, Johnson explained that Liz is given the space and freedom "to be queer and confused, anxious and awkward, broke and brilliant, scared and smart." The author specified, though, that she is most proud that the leading character in the title is "given the space for a happy ending."
Witherspoon also took to Hello Sunshine to share that Johnson's inspirational title is the inaugural Young Adult book pick for Reese's Book Club and is certainly not the last as she looks forward to highlighting more emerging writers on her platform.
"I've been reading so many incredible, diverse stories in the YA genre and can't wait to share them with you each month as an additional pick," she wrote. "Good news for the avid readers out there. This means more book picks!"
