Former USC wide receiver Joseph Lewis was arrested again on Wednesday night.
According to multiple outlets, Lewis was taken into custody on suspicion of felony domestic violence. TMZ first reported the news Thursday morning and said Lewis was taken into custody around 11 p.m. Wednesday night after an alleged “physical altercation” between Lewis and a woman.
Joseph Lewis was released from jail earlier this month
Lewis recently served a 21-day jail sentence after entering a no contest plea to two domestic violence charges. Those charges stemmed from a February arrest that eventually led to five misdemeanor charges — three counts of domestic battery with an injury, one count of domestic battery without an injury and one count of false imprisonment — being filed in March.
Lewis initially rejected a plea deal, but later reconsidered with a trial looming. In addition to his jail sentence, Lewis was given 36 months probation, a 10-year ban from owning, using or possessing firearms and a protective order from contacting or being within 100 yards of the victim in that case. He also was ordered to enter a domestic violence treatment program.
USC suspended Joseph Lewis after his arrest
Lewis was immediately suspended by USC in February and subsequently removed from the Trojans’ roster.
“USC takes all reports of domestic abuse seriously and is cooperating fully with the law enforcement investigation,” the school said in a statement after Lewis’ arrest. “While this student code of conduct issue is being investigated, the student has been suspended from all football-related activities. Student disciplinary records and student conduct proceedings are confidential at USC and protected by law.”
Following Wednesday night’s arrest, USC reiterated to multiple outlets that Lewis is not on the team’s roster. The school has never formally announced if Lewis has been dismissed from the football program.
USC never formally dismissed Lewis from the team, though he was removed from the roster in spring practice. A school spokesman said this morning: “Not on the roster. Not on the roster."
