Ranking the college football 150th anniversary throwback uniforms

As part of the upcoming celebration of 150 years of college football, several Under Armour-affiliated schools unveiled throwback uniforms on Tuesday. The uniforms are designed to commemorate “a key moment in team history” for that particular university.

“We saw an opportunity to celebrate both the 150 years of college football and our schools’ football heritage with throwback uniforms that will be worn throughout the 2019 season. Each uniform contributes a chapter to the history of college football in its own way, and uniquely resonates with the students, alumni and fans,” Nick Billiris, Under Armour’s senior design director for team sports, said in a press release.

Below, we decided to rank the throwback uniforms we like best.

7. Wisconsin

Like Northwestern, Wisconsin is throwing it way back with these uniforms for the Sept. 28 game against the Wildcats.

The plainness of the numbers without a nameplate look cool on the back, but the simple “UW” on the front and helmet are a little underwhelming.

6. Northwestern

There will be throwback uniforms on both sides when Northwestern and Wisconsin meet at Camp Randall on Sept. 28.

There’s something about that white uniform that looks great, but these are still pretty simple compared to the other teams on the list.

5. South Carolina

South Carolina’s “Black Magic” uniforms recall those worn in the mid-1980s and also include the team’s throwback garnet helmet, the school said.

The mesh numbers really bring you back, don’t they? They’ll apparently be part of the team’s rotation moving forward, too.

4. Boston College

Boston College is bringing it back to the era of Doug Flutie with these classic 1984 throwbacks. That season, the Eagles went 10-2 and infamously came back to beat Miami with Flutie’s Hail Mary pass to Gerard Phelan as time expired.

3. Cincinnati

The all-red combination with black- and -white-striped pants for Cincinnati “represent a multi-year period from the late 1950s to early 1960s.” The look also has a white helmet with a red and black stripe.

UC did not specify in which game the team will wear these uniforms.

2. Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s throwbacks are based on the “classic design” worn by the 1988 national championship team, a team that went 12-0.

Anybody that loves classic college football uniforms, this is the one for you — especially if you’ve been a little leery of some of the wacky alternate uniforms the Fighting Irish have worn in recent seasons.

The Irish will wear these uniforms at home against Boston College on Nov. 23.

1. Maryland

These ones are sweet, and Maryland is bringing them back for homecoming against Michigan on Nov. 2. The “Terps” script on the helmet is especially sharp and the yellow, black and white stripes on the sleeves are a perfect touch.

"I was raised on the Terps script," Maryland head coach Michael Locksley said. "I fell in love with the teams that donned those uniforms. I remember watching guys like Boomer and Frank Reich guiding the Terps in those uniforms. I know our team will be excited to bring that back for homecoming."

Others

Utah was another school that teased a throwback uniform. The Utes will wear them for the Nov. 16 home game against UCLA, but have not revealed the full look.

Other Under Armour schools Cal, Colorado State, Navy, Temple and Texas Tech are also expected to unveil throwback uniforms for the #CFB150 heritage series.
