What ranked teams could get upset in Week 7?

Saturday’s Week 7 college football slate features seven ranked teams going on the road to play unranked opponents. Are we looking at a bit of déjà vu? In Week 4, seven ranked teams traveled to unranked opponents. Four of them lost, including Virginia Tech at Old Dominion, a game we think is the biggest upset of the season.

Will we see multiple ranked teams lose to unranked opponents again? We could. Here are those seven games ranked in order of least likely to most likely upset. Spoiler alert: figuring out this order was tough.

7. No. 23 South Florida (-7.5) at Tulsa [Friday]

The Golden Hurricane only lost by seven at Texas and gave Houston a run for a while until the Cougars ran away in Week 6 thanks to some turnovers. South Florida’s offense has been fantastic in 2018, averaging 6.77 yards per play. The upset risk comes because USF’s defense is No. 98 in the country. And crazy things sometime happen on Friday nights.

6. No. 10 UCF (-4.5) at Memphis

This may be the toughest game remaining on UCF’s schedule until the Knights play Cincinnati and South Florida at the end of November. How crazy would it be if both UCF and USF were undefeated heading into the last week of the regular season? Memphis was UCF’s opponent in the AAC title game a year ago but is having a rough start to the season. At 3-2 it has losses to Navy and Tulane and the Tigers’ best win is over … no one? The three wins have come against Georgia State, South Alabama and UConn.

5. No. 6 West Virginia (-6.5) at Iowa State

Night games in Ames can ruin undefeated seasons. Just ask Oklahoma State, whose national title hopes were eliminated in 2011 by a Thursday night game at Iowa State. There’s a chance Iowa State could do the same to West Virginia, especially if freshman quarterback Brock Purdy plays as well as he did against the Cowboys a week ago. This West Virginia team took care of business in Lubbock two weeks ago and should do the same Saturday night to keep Will Grier’s Heisman campaign rolling.

4. No. 14 Florida (-7.5) at Vanderbilt

This could be a letdown game for Florida after ending LSU’s undefeated season a week ago. And we’re not really sure what to make of Vanderbilt. Yeah, the Commodores are probably one of the weaker teams in the SEC East but they gave Notre Dame all it could handle and beat a decent Middle Tennessee State team by four touchdowns in Week 1. Florida is a deserved favorite here, but Vanderbilt is always good for at least a near-upset or two every season.

3. No. 16 Miami (-6.5) at Virginia

Is it risky to trust Miami the week after it plays Florida State? The Hurricanes beat Georgia Tech 25-24 after beating the Seminoles in 2017 and lost to North Carolina after losing to the Seminoles in 2016. Add in a trip to a Virginia team that gave Miami all it could handle at Hard Rock Stadium in 2017 and an upset looks plausible. Virginia’s offense is underrated. Miami needs to force a couple of turnovers to not be an upset risk.

2. No. 22 Texas A&M (-2.5) at South Carolina

Did you know that A&M is 4-0 all-time against the Gamecocks? The Aggies are back in the top 25 after ending Kentucky’s undefeated season and South Carolina is coming off a wild win against Missouri. The Gamecocks should be able to move the ball much better than Kentucky did on the A&M defense with either Jake Bentley or Michael Scarnecchia at quarterback and the defense kept Drew Lock in check in Week 6.

1. No. 19 Colorado at USC (-7)

Yeah, this one isn’t much of an upset if USC wins. The Trojans are getting a homefield and name recognition boost on the betting line. But Colorado’s 5-0 record so far is no fluke and the Buffs will vault into the top 15 with a win against USC. The Trojans have been playing much better since losing to Stanford and Texas in September and are still the Pac-12 South favorites until someone else takes the title from them.
