Putting spring training's craziest new food creation to the test

SURPRISE, Ariz. — It wouldn’t be baseball season if we didn’t have a new frankenfood concession item creating a buzz. And it wouldn’t be 2017 if people on the Internet weren’t both drooling over it and wondering, “who thought of that monstrosity?”

That’s what brought us to Surprise Stadium, where last week one stand along the third-base line started selling the Triple Play Dog, a beast of a stadium food that is to a hot dog what a Hummer is to a car. It’s a hot dog wrapped in a hamburger wrapped in bacon then topped with cheese, tomatoes, onions and a spicy mayo.

Once we arrived in Surprise, our mission was simple: Find out if fans thought the Triple Play Dog was any good and — as an added bonus — see how quickly they could eat the entire thing.

The Triple Play Dog packs 890 calories and costs $8.75. It was dreamt up by concession company Aramark, which operates Surprise Stadium as well as many other stadiums across baseball. At the moment, Aramark has no specific plans to expand the Triple Play Dog into major-league stadiums. But an Aramark rep tells Yahoo Sports that could change if it gets popular enough. Thus far at Surprise Stadium, it’s been a big seller in just a few games.

But let’s not get distracted from the main question: Is it good?

For that part, we enlisted the help of three friends and baseball lovers — John McInnis, Mike Boyd and Eric Mueller. We asked them to not only eat the Triple Play Dog but make a competition out of it.

That, by the way, is a request our three taste-testers were more than happy to accommodate since they’re a competitive bunch who even floated the idea of giving the winner the first pick in their upcoming fantasy baseball draft — *cough* on Yahoo Sports *cough*.

The contest was a close one, but Boyd prevailed, narrowly beating McInnis.

“I’d buy it,” he said. “That’s good.”

And he had the cheese on his face to prove it.
