Purdue could have quarterback Elijah Sindelar around for two more seasons.

Sindelar, the team’s starting quarterback at the beginning of 2018, got a waiver from the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility. That means Sindelar will effectively be a junior in 2019 and a senior in 2020, though he told the Lafayette Journal & Courier that the best case scenario would be if he ended up not using the extra year of eligibility.

“My goal is not to use it if I don’t have to,” Sindelar told the paper. “Hopefully, I can perform well enough this season to be able to get drafted. That would be ideal. For some reason, if that does not happen and I’m able to take that sixth year to increase that opportunity then that’s what is going to happen.”

Injured left knee in 2017

Sindelar played in 12 games in 2017 but suffered a torn left ACL against Northwestern at the beginning of the season. He ended up playing the final three games of the season with that injury as Purdue beat Arizona in the Foster Farms Bowl before having surgery after the season.

He started the season-opener in 2018 against Northwestern and played some in the next week’s game against Eastern Michigan. However he ended up missing the rest of the season with tendinitis in the knee. After redshirting in his first year at Purdue the injury redshirt covers the 2018 season.

With David Blough a senior in 2018, Sindelar enters the 2019 season as the team’s presumed starter. He’s 227-of-405 passing for 2,547 yards, 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions throughout his career.
