Purdue had a disappointing 14-12 loss to Rutgers on Saturday, but pulled out one of the cooler plays we’ve seen this season.

On the first play of the second quarter, Boilermakers coach Jeff Brohm dialed up a flea flicker. Well, sort of.

It was a FAKE flea flicker. Watch this:

A normal flea flicker involves a handoff to the running back and a pitch back to the quarterback after the back takes a few steps toward the line. Purdue’s D.J. Knox faked the pitch back to Elijah Sindelar and took off for a 41-yard gain.

That’s not the first time Brohm has pulled that play out of his back pocket. The first time he showed that one to the world was during the team’s spring game.

Purdue trailed Rutgers almost the entire game, but had a chance to tie things up in the final minute. David Blough hit Anthony Mahoungou for a 10-yard touchdown with 25 seconds to go, cutting the lead to 14-12. It was an impressive catch, too:

However, Rutgers stopped the Boilermakers on a tying two-point conversion try, allowing the Scarlet Knights to hold on for the second straight Big Ten win.

Rutgers improved to 3-4 (2-2 Big Ten) with the victory. Purdue dropped to 3-4 (1-3).
