A Purdue offensive lineman was arrested Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a former teammate.

According to the Lafayette Journal & Courier, Martesse Patterson is facing a felony battery charge stemming from an alleged incident with former teammate Alex Hilger earlier this month. Hilger told police that Patterson punched him in the face on Sept. 7, resulting in a broken jaw.

Hilger, who left the team in May, filed a complaint with police on Sept. 11. Hilger played in 12 games on special teams in 2015 as a walk-on.

From the Journal & Courier:

Hilger alleged that on Sept. 7, Patterson entered Hilger’s room at their residence in the 800 block of Hayes Street in West Lafayette “to borrow some property.” Hilger told Patterson he was not allowed to borrow the property, but Patterson took it anyway and returned to his room.

When Hilger approached Patterson to retrieve his possession, Patterson punched him in the face, according to the affidavit. Hilger sought treatment at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after sustaining a broken jaw requiring a two-day hospital stay. The affidavit cites medical records showing Hilger suffered a “displaced fracture of the left mandible and a non-displaced fracture of the right mandible.”

On Sept. 19, West Lafayette police Detective Matthew S. Coddington spoke with Patterson, who admitted taking the property and striking Hilger in the face.

Patterson, a redshirt sophomore, started the first two games of the season at left tackle but did not play over the weekend vs. Nevada. He also played in 11 games in 2015 with three starts. Per the Journal & Courier, Purdue coach Darrell Hazell said Wednesday there was no timetable for Patterson’s return.

Purdue, now 2-1 after beating Nevada, opens its Big Ten slate Saturday at Maryland. Hazell said junior Jalen Neal will start at left tackle, like he did vs. Nevada.
