Pros vie for John Scott Cup in 'Da Beauty League'
The Legend of John Scott continues to grow in the offseason.
Starting Tuesday night in Edina, Minnesota, ‘Da Beauty League’ will take to the ice for a series of games that will last until the championship game on August 10. The winner will receive the inaugural John Scott Cup.
Now we know what you’re thinking: Why would we devote our time to covering a beer league that awards a trophy named after an NHL All-Star?
Despite the beer league sounding name, Da Beauty League is a mix of NHL, AHL, NCAA and international players with a majority residing in Minnesota and others from various states and provinces across North America.
And no, they’re not washed up, has-been NHL’ers either.
Just some of the better known NHL players split across six teams: Zach Parise, David Backes, Dustin Byfuglien, Ryan McDonagh, Nick Bjugstad, Matt Hendricks, Jake Gardiner, Nick Leddy, Matt Carle, Anders Lee, Brock Nelson, James Van Riemsdyk, Alex Goligoski, Ryan Carter and Justin Braun.
Why name the league ‘Da Beauty League?’
To those that run it, in hockey parlance a ‘beauty’ is considered the highest honor one can receive from his or her teammates. Additionally, “the Beauty is the guy who plays for the love of the game, who is also talented and loved by the rest of the team.”
With this in mind, it feels appropriate that the trophy be named after Mr. John Scott. From the league’s press release, “Scott is well known for his prowess as an NHL enforcer and recent NHL All Star MVP honor. Scott is a true beauty and the inspiration for Da Beauty League logo.”
Scott is not listed as a player; however, the league has bestowed upon him the important title of “Very Part Time Honorary Commissioner.” Something tells us he won’t get the boos like other commissioners if he is on hand to give out the trophy in August – out of respect and/or fear.
Intrepid Minnesota Wild Beat reporter, Michael Russo, has the details for those wanting to attend:
“The league includes three games consecutively each night with the first game starting on most nights at 6 p.m. and the third game ending around 9:45. The games will consist of two 30-minute running halves.
Entry to the each night’s slate of games is $5 per person. Kids shorter than the picture of Dustin Byfuglien are allowed in for free. Season passes can be purchased for just $25.”
The league promises “fast paced professional hockey in a casual environment.” Games are four-on-four and played every Tuesday and Thursday night at Braemar Arena through August 9-10 . Note that rosters can change depending on the personal schedule of the player.
According to Russo, proceeds from the game will be donated to United Heroes League (formerly Defending the Blue Line) and other various charities.
