Prince Harry hopes Netflix documentary will bring end to stereotypes

Prince Harry has said he hopes a Netflix documentary he took part in will help end the stereotyping of para-athletes, as he prepares to produce more programming with his wife Meghan.

Harry, 35, was involved in Rising Phoenix, a documentary about the formation of the Paralympic Games, appearing on screen to talk about the power of sport after injury.

The royal founded the Invictus Games, a sporting event for former military personnel, who were injured in combat.

Speaking to some of the athletes featured in the Netflix documentary, he said: “With COVID and everything else that is happening at the moment, your stories and the strength that you guys show, is incredible and that needs to be seen more.

“It needs to be spoken about more, to try and get rid of the stereotyping to get rid of those preconceptions.”

He added: “My biggest hope is that people will watch this film and go ‘No matter how hard my life is, no matter how hard a day or a week can be, this what I aspire to, not just for me but for my family and all the loved ones around me’.

“It is that element that I think will end up changing the world, so well done and thank you very much.”

He was speaking to Paralympians including the US’s Tatyana McFadden and Matt Stutzman, Italy’s Bebe Vio, France’s Jean-Baptiste Alaize and South Africa’s Ntando Mahlangu.

Harry and Meghan confirmed on Wednesday that they had signed a deal with Netflix to produce documentaries, scripted series and children’s programming.

The couple will be setting up an as yet unnamed production company for their work.

Rising Phoenix is streaming on Netflix now.
