In the 1990 movie Pretty Woman, Edward’s arrangement with Vivian was supposed to last just one evening yet here we are 30 years later, marking the release of the beloved movie that resulted.
The film was so successful when it arrived in theaters that it’s surprising there hasn’t been a sequel, especially at a time when it feels like favorites from the ‘80s and ‘90s are constantly getting the reboot treatment.
But there’s a reason for that, which the film’s late director, Garry Marshall, said on Today in March 2015: “We made a pact a long time [ago] — when we did it,” he explained. “We said, we’re not doing Pretty Woman 2 unless we all do it together.”
By “we,” he meant himself and lead actors Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.
Sadly, Marshall died at 81 in July 2016.
The news about a sequel might be tough to take if the original weren’t so enjoyable to watch all these years after it first arrived in theaters. The shopping montage! Vivian singing Prince in the tub! That jewelry box scene!
Pretty Woman has become such an iconic movie that it doesn’t need a second installment.
