England secured top spot in Group D at Women's Euro 2017 as Toni Duggan and Nikita Parris found the net in a 2-1 win over Portugal.

Head coach Mark Sampson made 10 changes from the side who had beaten Spain in the second round of group games, with centre-back Millie Bright the only holdover.

The unfamiliar nature of the lineup showed in an uncomfortable first half for the Lionesses, who were handed a lead inside eight minutes after a disastrous error from Patricia Morais.

The Portugal goalkeeper miscued her clearance straight into the path of Duggan, who joined Barcelona in one of women's football's highest-profile transfer before the start of the tournament. The 26-year-old celebrated her 50th cap in style, clipping an effort over Morais and into the back of the net.

Yet England looked rusty in defence, particularly on their left flank, and it was not long before they were carved apart, Diana Silva cutting back from the byline for Carolina Mendes to tap home.

The first goal Sampson's side had conceded in the Netherlands did not prompt an immediate upswing in England's performance but the half-time whistle came at the right time for the Lionesses.

Three minutes after the interval Parris took down a flick over the top of the defence from Manchester City team-mate Isobel Christiansen, bustling past two defenders before slotting home.

Portugal were unable to rouse themselves again, a curling free-kick by Dolores Silva their best chance, meaning their Iberian rivals Spain qualified at their expense despite a 1-0 defeat to Scotland.

It was England, though, who topped the group. They will now face France in the quarter-finals in Deventer on Sunday.
