Pond hockey: a casualty of New Brunswick's harsh winter

New Brunswick's winter hasn't been ideal for outdoor hockey.

At Saint John's Rockwood Park, which has an outdoor hockey rink maintained by city workers, it's been buried because the priority has gone to clearing city streets.

Even Good Samaritans aren't bothering to help out.

"They haven't even attempted it. There's so much snow, it's just impossible," said Shyla Arsenault, the assistant manager at the Lily Lake Pavilion.

To prepare for its annual hockey tournament fundraiser earlier this year, crews spent about 36 hours cleaning up. It was all for naught as the event was cancelled because of a massive snowfall just before the tournament.

Not surprisingly, Lily Lake has remained under a thick, pile of snow this winter and will likely remain that way for a while yet.
