An argument that led to domestic assault allegations vs. former Michigan cornerback Jourdan Lewis was reportedly about utility bills.

Lewis is charged with misdemeanor domestic assault after a March 15 incident with his girlfriend. According to the police report obtained by Land of 10 and other outlets, police were called by Lewis’ girlfriend after an argument over the lights being left on in the apartment became physical. The woman is accusing Lewis of pushing her to the ground and also grabbing her by the throat.

The argument became “heated” per police and Lewis allegedly went into a bedroom closet and shut the door after throwing pillows.

At that point, according to the report, Lewis went into the bedroom closet and shut the door. The alleged victim stated that Lewis was punching the door from the inside and that she went into the closet to make sure he was not causing damage.

“At some point Lewis stepped on her hair,” the police report stated, noting that the woman did not know how she ended up on the ground. The alleged victim said Lewis dragged her across the living room floor and stated that Lewis grabbed her by the neck and held her on the floor “for about three seconds.

Lewis countered her claims by telling police the woman wouldn’t leave him alone and that the closet door hit him in the face when she forced it open. He said she also grabbed his leg to prevent him from leaving the apartment. The woman did not have any marks on her neck, per police, and had scratches on her nose and left hand.

“When asked if Lewis had grabbed (the woman’s) throat he stated that he may have grabbed it while trying to get her off him but had no intentions to hurt (her),” the police report said. “Lewis stated at no time was he trying to assault (her), he was trying to leave.”

Lewis was an All-American in 2016 and widely considered to be an early-round selection in the NFL draft. He gained national honors despite missing three games at the beginning of the season with two injuries.

A hearing is set for April 12 regarding the charges, which were filed the afternoon after police were summoned to the couple’s apartment. Lewis tweeted that afternoon that it was “sad that somebody would want to control you so bad they would ruin your life over it.”
