Pirates-Giants Preview

AP - Sports

As the San Francisco Giants hope to keep from matching their longest skid of the season, Tim Hudson hopes to receive some support and end his slide at home.

A loser in three straight at AT&T Park, Hudson tries to help the Giants avoid a sixth straight defeat Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

San Francisco (57-49) has been outscored 24-5 during its five-game slide and managed four hits off Vance Worley in Monday's 5-0 loss to Pittsburgh.

The Giants continue to struggle at home, where they've averaged 2.7 runs while losing 20 of 26 after scoring 4.3 per contest to win 22 of the first 31. After the Los Angeles Dodgers swept a three-game set at AT&T Park over the weekend to overtake San Francisco for first place in the NL West, the Giants were shut out for the third time in six home contests.

"This is kind of where you make your money at,'' Monday's loser Madison Bumgarner said. ''It's really weird.''

Hudson (8-7, 2.65 ERA) went 5-0 with a 2.16 ERA and received an average of 5.22 runs of support in his first seven home starts, but has been given one while on the mound and none in the last two in posting a 5.68 ERA over the last three at AT&T Park.

The right-hander has yielded an earned run in 13 1-3 innings to split his last two overall outings - both on the road. He gave up two unearned runs in six innings of a 2-1 loss at Philadelphia on Thursday.

Hudson had a major league-low 1.81 ERA, a 7-2 record and received 46 runs while on the mound in his first 13 starts. In the last seven, he's received 11 runs to go 1-5 with a 4.40 ERA.

He gave up an earned run and four hits through 8 2-3 innings at Pittsburgh (56-49) on May 6 before Starling Marte tripled off him and scored on a throwing error on the same play to hand the Giants a 2-1 defeat.

Pablo Sandoval had two hits Monday for San Francisco, which dropped six straight from June 13-20.

Teammate Buster Posey is 3 for 17 in his last six games but 3 for 6 against Francisco Liriano (2-7, 4.18), who is 2-2 with a 2.43 ERA in his last six starts and 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in three since missing a month with an oblique strain.

Liriano returned from the disabled list to allow a three-run homer in four innings of a 6-3 loss at Cincinnati on July 13, but has yielded an earned run over 12 innings to go 1-0 in the next two that both came at home. The left-hander gave up that run and four hits in seven innings of a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

"I'm not at the point I want to be yet but everything is getting better and everything is moving forward,'' Liriano said.

He faced the Giants for the first time in 2013, going 1-1 with a 7.20 ERA.

The Pirates have won two straight road games following a 2-8 stretch away from home.

Josh Harrison, who homered for the second straight game Monday, is 6 for 9 with three RBIs in those two after going 5 for 27 in his previous eight.

Teammate Andrew McCutchen, however, is hitless over 10 at-bats in three games and 2 for 21 in the last six. He's 3 for 16 versus Hudson.
