Phillip Schofield has addressed the future of his presenting career, after stepping down from his hosting role on ITV's This Morning. The TV presenter has been at the centre of a controversy after recently admitting to an affair with a younger male colleague.

Opening up in an emotional new interview, Schofield said he's "lost everything" and doesn't see a future for his career in television. Reflecting on the controversy, Schofield confessed he doubts he'll ever return to work in TV.

"I have to talk about television in the past tense, which breaks my heart," he told the BBC. "I have lost everything.

"What am I going to do with my days?" Schofield continued. "I see nothing ahead of me but blackness, and sadness, and regret, and remorse, and guilt. I did something very wrong, and then I lied about it consistently."

The former This Morning presenter made it clear he believes his "career is over".

After the revelations about Scofield's relationship with a younger colleague arose, he was dropped by his talent agency and axed as an ambassador of The Prince's Trust charity.

He was also recently replaced as the host of the British Soap Awards, an event he's hosted since 2006, with singer and TV personality Jane McDonald stepping up to present this year's ceremony instead.

ITV previously said it investigated reports of a relationship between Schofield and his younger colleague, but that both parties had repeatedly denied it. However, since then, ITV chief Dame Carolyn McCall has ordered an external investigation into the controversy surrounding Schofield and This Morning.

Schofield has said the affair was "a grave error", adding: "I shouldn't have done it". He went on to say he feels "desperately sorry" for all of the personal and professional consequences of his actions on the former colleague, his family and the This Morning team.

This Morning airs on ITV1.
