Phillip Schofield’s confession that he had an affair with a young colleague onThis Morning has sparked calls for an independent inquiry.
The 61-year-old, who admitted last week that he lied to his employers, as well as to co-star Holly Willoughby, his agent and his family about the nature of his relationship with his colleague, has resigned from ITV altogether.
In his statement to the Daily Mail shared on Friday, Schofield explained that he had an “unwise” but “not illegal” consensual on-off relationship with someone working on This Morning.
Former culture secretary Nadine Dorries told the BBC on Sunday that questions still remained about what safeguarding had been in place and how Schofield’s colleague came to be employed on the daytime TV show.
The employee in question was allegedly 15 when he first met Schofield during a school visit, the Mail on Sunday reports. Lawyers representing Schofield confirmed to the Evening Standard that he met the boy when he was 15, but said the affair began after he started working at ITV, after he turned 18.
Willoughby said on Saturday 27 May that it has been “very hurtful” to find out he lied about the affair, while an ITV spokesperson said the channel felt “badly let down” by Schofield.

On Friday (26 May), Phillip Schofield admitted to lying about an affair with a colleague on This Morning.
The news comes less than a week after he dramatically quit the show he presented alongside Holly Willoughby amid rumours of a feud between the two.
In a statement to the Daily Mail, Schofield said: “I did have a consensual on-off relationship with a younger male colleague at This Morning.
“In an effort to protect my ex-colleague I haven’t been truthful about the relationship.”

This Morning broadcaster ITV has denied the show is about to be taken off air, after speculation over its fate following the Phillip Schofield controvsery.
ITV denied reports in Sunday’s newspapers about the daytime show’s future, with a spokesperson commenting: “As we said on the record yesterday [Saturday], This Morning is not under review and there are no plans for the show to be axed. This Morning will return as normal tomorrow.”
Schofield, 61, resigned from ITV on Friday 26 May, as well as being dropped by his talent agency YMU, after admitting to an “unwise” but “not illegal” affair with a young male colleague on This Morning.
His former co-star Holly Willoughby issued a statement saying Schofield had previously denied that rumours of the affair were true, saying his admission was “very hurtful” and she was still processing the news.
Willoughby is currently on a two-week holiday and scheduled to return to This Morning on Monday 5 June.
Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, who usually present the Friday edition of the programme, have been co-hosting in her absence.

“The first thing I want to say is: I am deeply sorry for having lied to them, and to many others about a relationship that I had with someone working on This Morning. Eamonn Holmes has shared a startling claim about Phillip Schofield‘s decision to quit This Morning.
On Saturday (20 May), Schofield announced he was “stepping down” from the ITV daytime show a week after it was reported he had fallen out with Willoughby, his co-host.
However, Holmes, who previously called the pair “actors”, has questioned Schofield’s wording. In the statement, he said: “ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.”
Holmes believes the presenter “was sacked”.

Loose Women star Nadia Sawalha has become the latest ITV star to discuss Phillip Schofield’s departure from This Morning.
Speaking on her podcast Coffee Moaning, the daytime TV star explained why many ITV stars hadn’t discussed the topic publicly.
“This story with Phillip and Holly is just huge, it’s just everywhere. There’s so much speculation and so much chat,” she said.
“I think everybody at ITV, like my colleagues... there is the constant question of why haven’t we said anything? Why are we not saying anything?”
She continued: “It is difficult, because I do have a rule..., and I think it’s a good one, that I don’t bad-mouth people that are colleagues. I think that’s what makes you a decent person or not.
“There are people who don’t stick to that rule and I believe that a certain person who is in the news at the moment didn’t stick to that so much with me a long while ago. I’m just going to leave that there.”

In a scathing column written for The Sun, Morgan reacted to the news of Phillip Schofield’s departure from This Morning.
“For ITV to not even give him the chance to say a proper goodbye to his large, loyal audience after 21 years struck me as needlessly churlish, and I know he’s utterly heartbroken about it because he told me himself,” Morgan wrote.

ITV issued a response this week to speculation that Phillip Schofield was “sacked” from his role as co-host on its popular daytime show This Morning.
Following claims by former This Morning host Eamonn Holmes, who now fronts a show for GB News, the broadcaster insisted that Schofield’s departure was a mutual agreement between him and ITV.
“Phillip Schofield’s decision to step down from This Morning was (as his statement made clear) a decision agreed between Phillip and ITV,” a spokesperson told The Independent.
The 61-year-old left following intense scrutiny over his relationship with co-host Holly Willoughby, amid rumours the pair had fallen out.
