Phillies minor leaguer Daniel Brito stable after suffering 'medical emergency' on field

Philadelphia Phillies minor league infielder Daniel Brito is in stable condition following a “medical emergency” he suffered on the field last week, the team said on Tuesday afternoon.

Brito is still in the hospital following a pair of surgeries, and is undergoing further testing. His girlfriend and his mom, who flew in from Venezuela, are now with him.

Brito — a member of the Phillies’ triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs — was near third base on Saturday night in the first inning of their doubleheader with the Rochester Red Wings.

Brito, per the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, nearly fell to the grass after stumbling around but was caught by Red Wings manager Matt LeCroy, who was in the third base coaches box at the time. Iron Pigs manager Gary Jones came out to help, too, and they helped Brito lay down safely.

He remained on the ground for about 20 minutes while a paramedic administered oxygen, per the report. He was then transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Both games of the double header were postponed.

Brito underwent one surgery on Saturday, and then another on Sunday — but it’s not clear specifically what for.

Brito, 23, signed with the Phillies when he was 16. He’s worked his way through their minor league system ever since, and has played on both their double-A and triple-A teams this season.

“He needs a lot of prayers. It’s scary,” Phillies manager Joe Girardi said last weekend, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “It just shows you how precious everything is.”
