PALM BEACH, Fla. – The NHL announced new members of the executive committee for the Board of Governors following the second day of meetings, Friday.

Former Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider, who died earlier this year, was previously on the committee. Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos was not announced as being part of the committee anymore.

Winnipeg Jets owner Mark Chipman and Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson were elected into the group.

According to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, Karmanos was not at the Board of Governors because a sinus infection prevented him from flying. Karmanos has been selling parts of the Hurricanes for several years and the team was also the focus of some relocation rumors late last season. Last June, it was reported that Karmanos was being sued by his three adult sons who alleged he didn’t repay more than $100 million he borrowed from a trust established for them.

In mid-November, it was reported by the Raleigh News and Observer that the lawsuit was settled in mediation.

In the past, Bettman called the Karmanos lawsuit “overblown” and “a family dispute” in regards to how it could impact the Hurricanes.

Murray Edwards of the Calgary Flames, Craig Leipold of the Minnesota Wild, Ted Leonsis of the Washington Capitals, Henry Samueli of the Anaheim Ducks, Larry Tanenbaum of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Jeff Vinik of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Rocky Wirtz of the Chicago Blackhawks all remained on the committee. Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs remained the chairman of the committee.

“The one thing I think everybody needs to understand is the senior respected involved owners who are on the executive committee are there on behalf of what’s in the best interest of the league,” Bettman said. “They’re not there to represent their franchises.”
