Penny Oleksiak wins bronze, sets new Canadian record

Canada's Olympic star Penny Oleksiak won bronze in the 100-metre freestyle at the world short-course swimming championships in Windsor, Ont., Thursday, setting a new Canadian record in the process.

The 16-year-old from Toronto finished in third in the distasnce in which she won gold at last summer's Olympics, though in a 50-metre pool. Her time of 52.01 seconds lowered the national record she set in Wednesday's semifinals by 0.18 seconds.

The medal was Canada's fourth of the meet.

Windsor marks Oleksiak's first meet since she became one of Canada's biggest sports stars virtually overnight at the Rio Olympics.

She became the youngest summer Olympic gold medallist in Canadian history, first Canadian Olympic swimming champion since Mark Tewksbury in 1992, and most decorated Canadian at a Summer Games — all in her Olympic debut.

She also led a march to the medal podium by Canada's female swimmers, who captured six medals in Rio.
