Penn State said Tuesday that linebacker Manny Bowen and wide receiver Irv Charles were no longer members of the team.

“Manny Bowen and Irvin Charles are no longer members of the Penn State football team due to a violation of team rules,” a statement from the school said. “We appreciate their contributions to the program and wish them success in the future.”

Neither player traveled to Arizona for Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl vs. Washington.

Bowen missed the final three games of the regular season because of a suspension for a violation of team rules. He was also suspended for the Rose Bowl a year ago. He had 51 tackles through nine games in 2017 as a junior and started 12 games as a sophomore in 2016.

Charles is a sophomore who scored a long touchdown against Minnesota in 2016. He had one catch in 2017. Penn State coach James Franklin said in November 2016 that Charles might have been the most talented wide receiver he had coached.

“Irvin Charles has a very, very bright future,” Franklin said via Blue White Illustrated a year ago. “He is talented, talented, talented – maybe the most talented wide receiver I’ve ever been around.”
