Penguins lose goal on Ottawa coach’s challenge in Game 6 (Video)

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Trevor Daley thought he had opened the scoring in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Ottawa Senators.

There was a scramble in front of Senators goalie Craig Anderson at 3:04 of the second period. Daley finally jabbed it past Anderson for the 1-0 Penguins’ lead.

The Senators challenged the goal, and fans were treated to a lengthy video review.

The call? No goal.

From the NHL:

After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Referee determined that Daley prevented Anderson from doing his job in his crease. According to Rule 78.7, “The standard for overturning the call in the event of a ‘GOAL’ call on the ice is that the Referee, after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Toronto Video Room, determines that the goal should have been disallowed due to ‘Interference on the Goalkeeper,’ as described in Rules 69.1, 69.3 and 69.4. Therefore the original call is overturned – no goal Pittsburgh Penguins

That’s a tough one. The puck is in the blue paint. There’s a ton of contact between Erik Karlsson and Daley. There’s no question that Daley makes significant contact with Anderson, and shoves him into the net. We’re guessing the League felt that shove wasn’t influenced by the contact with Karlsson.
