Pass or Fail: Philadelphia Flyers' 50th anniversary jersey

The Philadelphia Flyers revealed their 50th anniversary jersey on Wednesday and the reaction from fans was that maybe they should go back to drawing board and come up with something different.

Many jersey unveilings in the NHL result in a “meh” response from fans of the team and hockey fans in general. Sometimes you’ll have a resounding positive response like when the Winnipeg Jets showed us all what they’ll be wearing during October’s Heritage Classic game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Then you have the kind of feedback that these Flyers jerseys elicited when they were launched into the social media stratosphere. The reaction wasn’t pretty, and there were dozens of variations of “these suck” and Goldmember memes in my Twitter mentions.

Here’s a look at them:

The gold is obviously being used for the 50th anniversary, and according to the Flyers, “Gold also serves as a symbol for the high standard and great achievements of the Flyers organization in its first 50 years.”

There’s also this nugget in the press release:

Flyers senior management reviewed dozens of jersey prototypes and over 100 logo sketches in preparation for the upcoming anniversary, finally settling on the designs unveiled today. The jersey and anniversary patch were approved and finalized in December 2015, when management received the blessing of Ed Snider – who approved both upon first sight.

The Flyers will wear these jerseys 12 times during the season, beginning with their home opener against the Anaheim Ducks on Oct. 20. According to CSN Philly’s John Boruk, the team will unveil a gold-less jersey when they play the Pittsburgh Penguins in their February Stadium Series game.

Now it’s time to tell us what you think.
