Yahoo Sports Paris Attacks Have UFC and Etihad Stadium Officials Reviewing Security for UFC 193
In wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris, UFC and Etihad Stadium officials issued a joint statement on Friday to try and reassure fight fans that will be attending UFC 193: Rousey vs. Holm.
The event is slated for Etihad Stadium on Sunday local time in Melbourne, Australia, which is Saturday in the U.S. The main event features UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey putting her belt on the line against Holly Holm, while the co-main event pits strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk defending against Valerie Letourneau.
The UFC is trying to set an attendance record at Etihad Stadium, which holds upwards of 70,000-plus spectators. With such a large contingent of people assembling in one location, it is no surprise that there would be security concerns after the multiple, coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris.
According to the UFC/Etihad Stadium joint statement, security is being reviewed to ensure that fight fans are as safe as possible:
Etihad Stadium and UFC jointly send their thoughts and sympathy to those impacted by the terrible incidents which occurred in France.
Regarding tomorrow’s scheduled UFC 193 card at Etihad Stadium, officials from Etihad Stadium, UFC, and Victoria Police have come together to review all major safety protocols and procedures prior to this major event. This risk assessment and planning process takes place before all events held at Etihad Stadium, and the venue, promoter and police will remain diligent in this process in light of today’s tragedies in France.
We have been advised by Victoria Police there is nothing to suggest that tomorrow’s event will in any way be impacted by the events in France, it is important to note that precautions are being taken to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all in attendance.
As of Saturday afternoon Australian time, FOX News was reporting the death tool at approximately 158 following coordinated terrorist attacks across Paris.
