Packers' Joe Philbin loses 2 challenges within 90 seconds of first game in charge

In case you’ve forgotten, this week began with Joe Philbin taking over as the Green Bay Packers’ interim head coach, after Mike McCarthy was fired.

Philbin and Green Bay are at home on Sunday hosting the Atlanta Falcons, and that means Philbin is handling head coaching duties in a game for the first time since 2015.

Let’s just say he’s finding it a bit … challenging.

2 flags, 2 losses in record time

Philbin is at best rusty when it comes to challenge flags.

He used both of the challenges he’s allowed in a game in the opening 83 seconds, and lost both.

On the Falcons’ second offensive play, Matt Ryan threw deep for Julio Jones, a 28-yard completion. Philbin didn’t agree that it was a catch, threw his red flag, and the call was upheld by the officials in New York.

It cost him a timeout.

Two snaps later, Ryan threw another pass to Jones; this time it went down as a 19-yard completion. Philbin didn’t agree that it was a catch, threw his red flag, and the call was upheld by the officials in New York.

It cost him another timeout.

More importantly, it means he is out of challenges for the rest of the afternoon, so if there’s a questionable call in, say, the fourth quarter and the score is close, Philbin can’t ask officials to take another look.

We don’t know if the league keeps track of things like this, but two flags from one coach before 90 seconds have passed in a game has to be a record.
