Oppenheimer surpasses Marvel movie in another box office milestone

Oppenheimer has passed another box-office milestone, with Christopher Nolan’s biopic now entering the top three for highest-grossing films of the year.

As reported by The Numbers, the story of the titular physicist has now grossed over $855 million worldwide, which sees it overtake MCU entry Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 to move into third place.

Though Oppenheimer has surpassed expectations, it seems likely that third place will be the pinnacle, with the drama still a whopping $500 million behind both Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

In addition to its latest record, Oppenheimer is also the highest-grossing film set during World War II, as well as becoming the highest-earning non-Batman film of Nolan’s career. In addition to popular success, the film also garnered critical acclaim, with the visuals and performances in particular receiving praise.

As a member of the star-studded cast, Florence Pugh recently revealed that Nolan actually apologised to her ahead of the casting as Jean Tatlock, with her lack of screentime being noted.

“I didn't really know what was going on or what was being made but Chris really wanted me to know that it wasn't a very big role and he understood if I didn’t want to come near it,” she began. “I was like: 'Doesn't matter, even if I'm a coffee maker at a café in the back of the room, let's do it.’

“We met for a drink in New York at the time, and it was just one of those bizarre moments in your career where you're like: 'I'm meeting Christopher Nolan, oh my god.' I remember he apologised about the size of the role and I was like: 'Please don't apologise!'” she added.

Oppenheimer is in cinemas now.
