Opening 25-year-old baseball cards with Sandy Alomar Jr.

You might recall that in our episode of 25-Year-Old Baseball Cards with Cleveland Indians coach Brad Mills, we pulled a Roberto Alomar card. If only that had happened in this episode!

On this week’s dive into baseball cards from the past, we’re talking to big brother Sandy Alomar Jr., the first-base coach for the Indians these days. We didn’t get Sandy’s little brother’s card, but we did get another big-name Indians star who you will surely recognize. (How’s that for a tease?)

OK, fine. It’s Albert Belle. And Alomar has a great story about Belle and Kenny Lofton. Alomar also pulled Bobby Bonilla, who he remembers all too well from the 1997 World Series (“He has the ring, I don’t,” Alomar said), a young Curt Schilling and the guy who was his backup catcher for a while. It’s another fun episode with a very nice guy.

If you’re new to this series, it started last year with a bunch of baseball cards from 25 years ago that my grandma bought. They were sitting in my garage and I thought, “Hey, let’s open them with baseball people.” So here we are. We’re opening 1992 Topps these days and looking for great old stories and memories.
