Olympic swimmer Sullivan retires from competition

The Associated Press

SYDNEY (AP) -- Former freestyle world record holder and three-time Olympic medalist Eamon Sullivan says he has retired competitive swimming just weeks after pulling out of the Australian team for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a shoulder injury.

Sullivan, a three-time Olympian who once held the 50m and 100m freestyle world records, says his retirement was prompted by ongoing shoulder problems.

The 28-year-old said he is at a point where he's had one too many injuries, and it has and become too much to manage. ''In the end my body has let me down, so I'm very disappointed but it's the right time.''

Sullivan won two silver and one bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as well as golds at the 2007 and 2011 world championships.
