Report: Oilers owner Daryl Katz battling life-threatening infection
Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz has been battling a life-threatening sinus infection over the past few years, according to Sportsnet’s John Shannon.
Katz has reportedly endured three surgeries over the past 10 months, and has one more scheduled. The infection has a 50 percent survival rate.

In fact, he carried an IV bag 24/7 during the playoff run, 2 seasons ago. The infection has a 50-50 survival rate. He's had 3 surgeries over the past 10 months with 1 more surgery to go. It is the primary reason why he hasn’t been around Edmonton and the team.

The 57-year-old’s illness has kept him away from the team in recent years but he was on hand to introduce Ken Holland as the Oilers’ new general manager Tuesday. It was Katz’s change in appearance that became the focal point, however, as his name quickly became the top Twitter trend in Canada and prompted questions from fans and media alike, which were eventually answered by Shannon’s report.
Katz purchased the Oilers in 2008 and led the charge in developing Edmonton’s new arena, Rogers Place, which opened its doors in 2016.
