Oilers' Puljujarvi miraculously hops on exercise bike three days after surgery

The transition to the North American game has been a troublesome one for Jesse Puljujarvi of the Edmonton Oilers.

The 20-year-old, 6-foot-4, 201-pound power forward turned heads at the 2016 World Juniors in Finland when he collected 17 points in only seven games to lead the home team to gold. That summer, he was selected fourth overall by the Oilers in the NHL draft.

Inconsistency and injuries have been his reality since, but he shared some good news with his Instagram followers on Thursday afternoon. Only three days after undergoing season-ending surgery on both hips in New York City, Puljujarvi was working out on an exercise bike.

Supported by a couple of crutches, the young man has somehow already begun his rehab.

Kuntoutus rehab day 3

This little bit of good news is hopefully the start of a giant wave of positivity for him as he really hasn’t lived up to expectations thus far.

Through 139 regular season games in three campaigns, he’s only scored 17 goals and picked up 37 points. In 46 contests this season, he had four goals and nine points. On top of that, he spent some time with Edmonton’s AHL affiliate in Bakersfield.

To put his struggles into perspective, nine players selected behind him in his draft year already have more points in their NHL careers than he does.

Edmonton’s Jesse Puljujarvi was pretty pumped to begin rehab only a few days after surgery on both of his hips.
