New Oilers Forward Adapting To McDavid
EDMONTON -- The new kid on the block is alright.
The Edmonton Oilers dipped their toes into the waiver pool recently, and the player they picked up is starting to find his groove. Kasperi Kapanen has played four games since getting scooped off of waivers and has been a pleasant surprise.
In Saturday night's game against the Colorado Avalanche, Kapanen potted his first goal of the season and his first as a member of the Oilers.
What's most impressive about this goal is that Kapanen is paying close attention to where Connor McDavid is going. He didn't move his feet much but stayed in open ice and was rewarded with a glorious feed from the captain that he made no mistake burying.
Kapanen hangs around the net and keeps his eyes on McDavid. Even though the captain had two Avalanche players draped over him, the newest Oiler floated closer to the net, anticipating a pass.
McDavid is excellent at a lot of things. One of them is his ability to draw defenders to him. This creates open ice for his linemates, who simply must go to those spots to cash in on golden opportunities. That's exactly what happened here.
He has spent 32 minutes playing on a line with McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Kapanen has already discovered the key to success. He can solidify his place on McDavid's wing by consistently doing that.
Oilers fans will be treated to more highlights like this one if that happens.
