Oilers' Connor McDavid to sign $106M deal: reports

Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid is set to sign an 8-year deal, expected to worth $13.25 million US annually, $106 million in total, according to reports.

The contract would represent the highest salary cap hit in the entire league, and be close to the maximum amount a player can earn, according to the CBA. No player is allowed to earn more than 20 per cent of the total cap, which, based on next season's cap of $75 million, would be $15 million.

McDavid, still only 20, has one more year remaining on his entry-level contract before his big pay raise kicks in, which gives the Oilers one more season of extra cap flexibility.

Because NHL players must wait until July 1 to sign extensions, the deal will not be made official until then, according to reports.

This past season, McDavid won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top point-getter, as well as the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player. He also won the Ted Lindsay Award for being the league's most valuable player as judged by the NHLPA.
