Now 1st in the East, KC Comets hold big season goals: ‘Competing for a championship’

The Kansas City Comets sit at the summit of the Major Arena Soccer League’s Eastern Conference after grabbing their first road win of the season on Saturday, December 9.

The Comets made their first of three visits to the East Coast scheduled for this season and came away with a 7-3 victory over the Harrisburg Heat. The Comets took control after conceding the opening goal and held it for the rest of the contest.

Zach Reget recorded his second hat trick of the season for the Comets, leading all scorers with three goals and an assist. Reget now leads the MASL with seven goals through three games.

The offensive prowess has been a team effort, with 13 players tallying a point in the first three games. Among those players has been rookie midfielder Mikey Lenis, who scored his first professional goal on Saturday in Harrisburg after getting two assists in the home opener last month.

“He’s had a great impact with his energy and his quality,” said coach Stefan Stokic about the former Sporting KC II player. “He’s still learning the game. I’m really happy for him to get that first goal. I’m hoping for many more.”

While the Comets are happy to be among the best in the league offensively, their drastically improved defense has been a significant difference from last season. The Comets are the only team in the MASL to average fewer than 3.0 goals against per game.

For that, Nicolau Neto earned back-to-back MASL Goalkeeper of the Week honors.

The Comets are in first place in the East with three wins in regulation, one point better than the second-place Monterrey Flash. With everything coming together, Stokic is pleased with the start to his first season as Comets head coach.

“We proved in the first two games that we can play well,” he said. “Now we showed that we can play on the road as well. With that statement, I feel like we’re a serious team that is competing for a championship.”

Next up is another tough test. The Comets play on back-to-back nights against the Texas Outlaws.

Game 1 of the set is in Texas on Saturday before the teams travel to Kansas City and meet at Cable Dahmer Arena on Sunday, December 17. Tickets for Sunday’s matchup are available at
