Notre Dame is losing another significant defensive contributor to a transfer.

Cornerback Nick Watkins said Thursday that he would graduate in May and find a new school to play for in 2018. Since he’s a graduate transfer he’ll be eligible immediately.

In his statement, Watkins wrote:

“First, I want to thank the University of Notre Dame for everything they’ve done for me throughout my career. When I decided to attend Notre dame, my primary goal was to earn a degree from this prestigious university and I’m proud to say that I’ll achieve that goal. With that being said, I’ll search for a new school to attend for my last year of college football. I’ll miss all the relationships that I’ve created with the university, including my classmates, professors and coaches. I’ll especially miss my teammates. They’ve meant so much to me. I’ve grown so much here and I appreciate all the valuable lessons that I’ve learned. Notre Dame will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Watkins began the 2017 season as a starter but lost his place in the starting lineup at the end of the season. He had 26 tackles and an interception.

He joins defensive end Jay Hayes as a transfer from the team. Hayes had said he was transferring to Oklahoma before deciding this week that he was heading to Georgia.

According to ND Insider, Watkins’ departure means Notre Dame has 87 scholarship players. The scholarship limit is 85.
