Anthony Herbert, an offensive lineman at Northern Michigan, died a short time after participating in morning workouts with the team Tuesday. He was 20 years old.

According to MLive.com, Herbert returned to his room after breakfast following the workout. No immediate cause of death was known.

“What caused his passing is unknown at this time and right now our concern is for Anthony’s family, friends, teammates, coaches and team staff, teachers and fellow students,” said University President Fritz Erickson in a statement.

Herbert participated in an early morning workout Tuesday, Jan. 17 and went to breakfast before returning to his room in Spaulding Hall. There, EMTs were called to his aid after he suffered a medical emergency, officials said.

Herbert was an 11-game starter at left guard for Northern Michigan in 2016 as a redshirt freshman. Northern Michigan is a Division II school in the Great Lakes Conference.

“In my brief time with Anthony, I could tell that he was a great young man,” Northern Michigan coach Kyle Nystrom said in a statement. “He was well respected by his coaches and teammates and was a leader on the offensive line. We are devastated by this tragedy, and we are keeping his family in our prayers.”
