North Texas’ leading returning receiver was arrested for DWI Wednesday morning.

According to the Denton Record-Chronicle, Turner Smiley was booked into the Denton City Jail at approximately 4 a.m. after an officer found him in a vehicle after reports of an accident. From the Record-Chronicle:

Denton police Officer Roopak Nair responded to the scene and saw a black man sitting in a blue Dodge Challenger with the airbags deployed. Nair smelled alcohol and asked what had happened, according to the affidavit.

Nair identified the driver as Smiley, who told the officer he had consumed five beers, according to the affidavit. Smiley told the officer that he had been drinking at The Tavern off Fry Street and that he shouldn’t have been driving.

Nair administered several sobriety tests that Smiley failed, according to the affidavit. Nair arrested Smiley.

North Texas coach Seth Littrell issued a commonly-worded statement regarding Smiley’s arrest that said the team was “aware of the situation” and was collecting facts.

“Until I have an opportunity to talk with him I will refrain from further comment,” Littrell also said. “We have high expectations for all of our student-athletes and we take situations like this very seriously. We will take an immediate and appropriate course of action after I speak with him.”

Smiley had 25 catches for 255 yards and a touchdown in 2015. Littrell was named North Texas’ coach at the end of the 2015 season after serving as the offensive coordinator at North Carolina.

UNT fired coach Dan McCarney after a 59-point October loss to FCS Portland State and Mike Canales was named the interim head coach for the rest of the season. UNT finished the 2015 season with a 1-11 record (the team’s only win came against UTSA). While UNT likely won’t contend for a bowl in 2016, the offense, which was 117th in the country last season, should at least improve.

A junior in 2016, Smiley had 14 catches for 195 yards as a freshman. He’s a native of nearby Frisco, Texas.
