When Team USA women's basketball take the court later this month in Tokyo, they will be chasing history; the chance to win seven consecutive gold medals, tying the men's basketball squad for the most consecutive golds in history. Should the squad succeed, they'll be collecting hardware while wearing some of the most creative jerseys designed by Nike.

Building off the momentum of the WNBA's 25th anniversary uniforms, Nike is focused on continuing to empower its women athletes by leading design innovation for her. The Swoosh focuses on fit and style while also combining signature fabric that benefit head coach Dawn Staley's talented roster.

"Inspired by the historic ’96 team that started the win streak, the iconic red uniform features unique design elements that celebrate this great team, including twelve stars which represent the 12-woman team and a hidden detail on the short’s side vent reveals the number of players throughout the federation’s history (84), the team’s number of international major tournaments (10) and the number of gold medals won (eight)," Tania Flynn, VP of Women’s Apparel Design at Nike said about the jerseys.

First-time athlete A'ja Wilson echoed Flynn's remarks with a glowing endorsement herself.

"Now seeing that I have my own jersey, it’s definitely full circle. I never would have imagined this. So it’s pretty cool that we’re paying homage to the ‘96 team because those are the ones that really cracked that glass ceiling. And now it’s up to us to shatter that thing. And I’m so happy that I’m a part of the shatter because I’m all in there for that."

As previously mentioned, the women's red uniform features classically-blocked typography on the chest. The laurel line on the neckline is similar to the uniforms from the ’96 women’s team in Atlanta. The navy side panels and the script are an ode to the past. Twelve stars, six down each side of the jersey, reflect the number of players on the team.
