Nick DeLeon sends Toronto FC into MLS Cup with wondergoal

It won’t be remembered as The Bat Flip or The Shot but Nick DeLeon just created a piece of history that ought to be fondly remembered among Toronto sports fans for years.

Squaring off against the favoured Atlanta United FC in the Eastern Conference Final, DeLeon put Toronto FC up 2-1 with a genuine wondergoal.

It simply doesn’t get much better than this. Although Atlanta’s defence stood idly by, DeLeon did well to separate from four separate opponents, then curl in a perfectly delivered strike past the outstretched Brad Guzan from outside the box.

DeLeon’s 78th-minute goal held up as the winner as Toronto held off a valiant comeback attempt from Atlanta to advance to the MLS Cup, where the Seattle Sounders are waiting.

It will be the third installation of the Toronto-Seattle rivalry. Seattle defeated Toronto in 2016 on penalties, but the Canadian club exacted revenge with a 2-0 victory in the 2017 final, winning its first title.

After missing the playoffs in 2018, Toronto FC now has a chance to cement itself as a dynasty. Who said Toronto’s championship summer ever had to end?
