NHL Three Stars: Isles escape with win; Flames shut out Leafs

No. 1 Star: Chad Johnson, Calgary Flames

It’s difficult to not assume Johnson is ‘the guy’ in net in Calgary when he continues to post outstanding numbers. Johnson picked up his third shutout of the month in the team’s 3-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. He made 39 saves for his eighth win of the year.

No. 2 Star: Anders Lee, New York Islanders

After the Islanders blew a 3-0 lead to the Pittsburgh Penguins, it looked like the game was headed to overtime and more of Jack Capuano’s hair would fall out. Lee saved all that by tipping in what would be the game winning goal with 26.6-seconds left in the third.

No. 3 Star: Logan Couture, San Jose Sharks

The Sharks forward led the team in scoring with two goals and an assist against the Los Angeles Kings. His first goal came with 55 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Sharks the 2-0 lead. Ryan Carpenter scored his first NHL goal 20 seconds later to put San Jose up by three.

Honorable Mention: Calgary went up 2-0 on Toronto within 49 seconds of puck drop with goals by Freddie Hamilton and Kris Versteeg. Matt Stajan scored with 4:11 left in the first for the 3-0 lead … The Isles tied the NHL record for quickest time between two goals with Lee’s goal and the empty netter that followed three seconds later. The Pittsburgh Penguins scored three goals in the third period to come back from an 0-3 deficit. Matt Murray submitted his nomination for ‘save of the year.’ … Dustin Brown scored the lone goal for the Kings, but he had to wait a couple minutes for it to be official. With 26 saves, Martin Jones earned win No. 11 of the season.

Did You Know? Sidney Crosby had two assists against the Islanders bringing his career total points against the team to 100.

Dishonorable Mention: The Leafs are now 0-4-1 in the second game of back-to-backs. Jhonas Enroth has made a majority of those starts and has yet to record a win this season … San Jose was an abysmal 37-percent on the faceoff dot. The Kings snapped their five game win streak in the 4-1 loss to the Sharks … Bryan Rust, Evgeni Malkin and Trevor Daley were all minus-3 (for what it’s worth).
