NHL Three Stars: Condon blanks Jackets, Tavares shines

No. 1 Star: Mike Condon, Ottawa Senators

The Senators goalie made 42 saves to lead Ottawa over the Columbus Blue Jackets, 2-0. He made 19 saves in the third period, and helped redeem himself during a 5-on-3 penalty kill that his delay of game penalty helped create.

No. 2 Star: John Tavares, New York Islanders

The Islanders star scored twice to help Doug Weight win his coaching debut, 3-0 over the Dallas Stars. Thomas Greiss made 23 saves. Tavares scored the first shorthanded goal of his career, as well as this awesome one:

No. 3 Star: Nino Niederreiter, Minnesota Wild

The Minnesota Wild blew a two-goal lead in 30 seconds during the second period, but Nino Niederreiter’s third-period power-play goal gave them a 4-3 win over the Arizona Coyotes. He had two goals and an assist in the win, while Jason Pominville had three assists.

Honorable Mention: Michael Grabner scored two goals and Henrik Lundqvist made 23 saves in the New York Rangers’ 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, peppering them with 41 shots. … Seven different Capitals scored in their 7-3 mauling of the St. Louis Blues. … The Calgary Flames rallied with three third-period goals, but the Nashville Predators hung on for a 4-3 win behind 32 saves from Juuse Saros. Ryan Ellis had two goals. … Nick Ritchie’s goal with 2:02 before overtime gave the Anaheim Ducks a 2-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche in a game that featured a 45-minute delay due to broken glass at Honda Center. … San Jose Sharks goalie Aaron Dell made 24 saves in their 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Logan Couture scored his 15th.
