NHL Three Stars: Canucks move to 4-0 thanks to Markstrom

No. 1 Star: Jakob Markstrom, Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks goalie made 26 saves in another gem of an effort, as Vancouver matched a team record with a 4-0-0 start in their 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. Daniel Sedin had the eventual game-winner in the third period.

No. 2 Star: Patric Hornqvist, Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins forward completed a rally against the San Jose Sharks, as Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup Final rematch, 3-2. He assisted on Scott Wilson’s game-tying goal and the scored the go-ahead goal at 14:02 of the third, his second of the season.

No. 3 Star: Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche

The Avs goalie made 27 saves in a 4-0 shutout of the Tampa Bay Lightning, including 12 in the third period when Colorado had only two shots on goal. Matt Duchene had two goals and an assist in the win.

Honorable Mention: Patrice Bergeron scored his first goal of the season, in his first game of the season, at 18:45 of the third period to give the Boston Bruins a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. Brad Marchand had the assist, and earlier scored his third of the season. Tuukka Rask made 28 saves. … Welcome to the winners’ circle Anaheim Ducks, as Ryan Garbutt’s goal at 11:34 of the third period gave them a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Matt Read scored his fourth in the loss. … Alex Ovechkin scored the go-ahead goal for the Washington Capitals in the third period, as they doubled-up the Florida Panthers, 4-2. Matt Niskanen had two assists. … Carey Price made 27 saves in his season debut, and Shea Weber scored his first as a Hab in their 5-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes. … Third-period goals by Zac Dalpe and Eric Staal – his third of the season – to rally the Minnesota Wild to a 3-2 won over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Auston Matthews scored his fifth. … The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Calgary Flames, 4-2, as Noah Hanifin had three assists and Jeff Skinner had a goal and an assist. … Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist, spoiling Nail Yakupov’s return to Edmonton in the Oilers’ 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues. Yak did open the scoring with his second of the season. … Alex Martinez scored at 1:20 of overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings a 4-3 win over the Dallas Stars, snapping their three-game losing streak. He previously assisted on a Jeff Carter goal.

Did You Know? Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr scored his 750th NHL goal in the second period for the Panthers, becoming the third player in history to reach the milestone with Wayne Gretzky (894) and Gordie Howe (801). He looked like this afterward:

Dishonorable Mention: Patrick Sharp was sent into the concussion protocol after a massive hit from Brayden McNabb. That set off Antoine Roussel to attempt to fight McNabb. Instead, he ended up taking a triple-minor in the second period and a 10-minute misconduct. He had 18 PIMs for the game. … The Flames were 0-for-6 on the power play. … Ondrej Palat and Steven Stamkos were a minus-3.
