No. 1 Star: John Tavares, New York Islanders

In the Islanders 6-3 win over the Minnesota Wild, the captain scored two goals and registered an assist. He was plus-2 and 9-for-15 on the faceoff dot. Here’s Tavares’s first goal of the game, a one-timer off the pass from Josh Bailey.

No. 2 Star: Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim Ducks

Getzlaf netted three assists as the Ducks handed the Vancouver Canucks their first regulation loss of the year. The Anaheim captain has eight points through the Ducks first six games of the season. Getzlaf sent a slick shot on net that bounced off Ryan Miller and up to Nick Ritchie for the forward’s first goal of the season and first game winning goal of his NHL career.

No. 3 Star: Zach Parise, Minnesota Wild

Despite his team taking the loss, Parise netted two goals: the 300th and 301st of his NHL career. He registered a game high 10 shots on goal (plus 2 attempts blocked and 3 missed shots).

Honorable Mention: All Edmonton skaters registered at least one shot on goal for a team total of 32. Cam Talbot had 32 saves in the 3-0 shutout of Winnipeg. Zach Kassian notched a goal and an assist for Edmonton. In the remaining second of the Oilers penalty kill, Kassian fed the puck to Connor McDavid. Darnell Nurse exited the box to join the captain on the 2-on-1, receives the pass, and beats Connor Hellebucyk.

… Anthony Beauvillier, Josh Bailey, and Ryan Strome earned two points each for the Isles. Alan Quine scored a goal and was a plus-3. Andrew Ladd finally picked up his first point with the Islanders by assisting on Tavares’s empty net goal … Always the Duck hunter, Loui Eriksson had two assists in the Canucks loss. Andrew Cogliano scored 33 seconds into the game against Vancouver setting a new record for quickest goal in a Ducks home opener.

… Radim Vrbata scored both goals for the Arizona Coyotes in their loss to the New York Rangers, 3-2. The Coyotes had 69 (nice) shot attempts – 29 shots on goal, 28 attempts blocked and 12 missed shots. J.T. Miller scored a power play goal on a team high seven shots on net for New York.

Did You Know? The Oilers are 5-1-0 for the first time since 1985-86 (via Sportsnet).

Dishonorable Mention: The Heritage Classic was delayed over an hour due to sunlight in Winnipeg … Chris Stewart, Teemu Pulkkinen, and Ryan Suter all a minus-3 against the Islanders … The Rangers were credited with 22 giveaways to Arizona’s four. Kevin Hayes was the worst offender with 6 … Vancouver was out-shot by Anaheim 37-19.
