Hockey sticks have been at the forefront of technological advances in the sport over the past few decades, from a sheer performance standpoint to their increasingly durable and lightweight construction. Still, NHL goaltenders have been tentative to adapt to the new trend, preferring to hold onto wooden and foam-core sticks until recently.
Kevin Woodley of NHL.com reported recently that “roughly half the NHL was using the old technology in 2016, and now only five goalies still use a wooden stick.”
Goaltenders who made the switch were unsurprisingly blown away by the benefits of upgrading from wood to composite, which were described as lighter, customizable, accessible and more durable.
"Once you switch, it's amazing to hold a wood stick and wonder how you played with it," Buffalo Sabres goalie Carter Hutton told NHL.com. "I switched two summers ago mainly because lots of guys were, so I knew I needed to get up to date. It's a huge difference, I think."
We’ve rounded up the top composite goaltender sticks on the market right now just in time for you to make the switch this season.
