Fantasy Hockey: Trade deadline advice for Top 100 players: 40-21
For most fantasy hockey leagues on Yahoo, the trade deadline is Feb. 19, which means we are firmly in the heart of TradeSZN.
If you’re on the brink of the playoffs, you’re probably looking to pull off a major move to try and gear up for the stretch run.
And if you’re hanging around the top of your league’s standings, it’s probably wise to push all of your chips into the middle and give yourself the best chance you can at winning this thing.

Note: This advice is catered toward season-long leagues, but some of the advice is transferable for dynasty and keeper leagues. These rankings are ordered by player ownership percentages on Yahoo on Feb. 10. The list has been made to include 20 goalies.
40. D Torey Krug, Boston Bruins (97% owned) - GP: 50 G: 8 A: 31 P: 39
Advice: Buy
This comes down to the same advice I offered when talking about Landeskog. You want to add players from explosive offenses and Krug, who quarterbacks the second-best power play in the NHL, is in an extremely fantasy-rewarding position.
39. C Sebastian Aho, Carolina Hurricanes (97% owned) - GP: 56 G: 31 A: 21 P: 52
Advice: Buy
Aho is right near the very top of my wish list as the fantasy hockey trade deadline nears, but you’re likely going to have to pay a premium to get him. Currently riding a six-game point streak, he’s playing his best hockey of the season. Additionally, the Hurricanes play 15 games during the fantasy playoffs (Mar. 9 - Apr. 4) - as many contests as any other team.
38. LW Jonathan Huberdeau, Florida Panthers (97% owned) - GP: 57 G: 20 A: 49 P: 69
Advice: Buy
Right now, there seems to be a potential buy-low opportunity with Huberdeau. Through eight games in the month of February, the 26-year-old has just four points. The Panthers play 14 games during the fantasy hockey playoffs.
37. LW Taylor Hall, Arizona Coyotes (97% owned) - GP: 55 G: 14 A: 32 P: 46
Advice: Buy
Chances are, the person in your fantasy hockey league was expecting a little more out of Hall when he was traded to the ‘Yotes. His per-game point totals are nearly identical since being dealt (.83 with New Jersey, .84 with Arizona).
His shooting percentage, however, is down over three percent from his career number which suggests he may be due for some puck luck.
36. G Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens (98% owned) - GP: 48 W: 24 GAA: 2.71 SV%: .913
Advice: Sell
Since the start of 2020, Price has completely turned his season around. In that stretch, he’s top-five amongst all goalies in wins, save percentage and goals-against average. With Shea Weber out for four-to-six weeks though, the Habs’ defense will take a significant hit. Price could be a nice sell-high candidate in your fantasy hockey league.
35. G Frederik Andersen, Toronto Maple Leafs (98% owned) - GP: 43 W: 24 GAA: 2.88 SV%: .909
Advice: Hold
After coming back from injury, Andersen had a less-than-stellar performance against the Dallas Stars. The addition of Jack Campbell, however, should help keep Andersen fresh down the stretch.
34. G Jordan Binnington, St. Louis Blues (98% owned) - GP: 41 W: 24 GAA: 2.74 SV%: .909
Advice: Buy
Binnington has been a liability for fantasy hockey owners since the middle of January. In each of his last nine appearances, the Blues goaltender has allowed three goals or more. Down the stretch, though, St. Louis has the second easiest strength of schedule in the NHL.
33. C, RW Blake Wheeler, Winnipeg Jets (98% owned) - GP: 58 G: 17 A: 32 P: 49
Advice: Hold
Wheeler hasn’t really had the season many expected. After back-to-back 90-plus point campaigns, he’s on pace for just 69 points this year. He’s been a little better lately, however, recording six points in six games during February. Wheeler’s been good enough lately to the point where you’re likely not going to get a bargain.
32. LW, RW Johnny Gaudreau, Calgary Flames (98% owned) - GP: 59 G: 14 A: 33 P: 47
Advice: Sell
By now, you already know that Gaudreau is not having a good season. His play of late, however, may have a fantasy owner in your league intrigued. In his last nine games, he’s notched nine points. Calgary plays just 12 games during the fantasy hockey playoffs, tied for the lowest of any team.
31. C Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins (98% owned - GP: 42 G: 18 A: 40 P: 58
Advice: Buy
Similarly to Aho, Malkin is someone that I would actively try to acquire as the deadline gets closer. Despite missing 13 games due to injury, the 33-year-old is on pace for 95 points. Pittsburgh’s offense remains a wonderland for fantasy production and it will play an impressive 14-game schedule during the fantasy hockey playoffs.
30. G Ben Bishop, Dallas Stars (99% owned) - GP: 38 W: 19 GAA: 2.37 SV%: .924
Advice: Buy
Although he loses a decent chunk of work to standout backup Anton Khudobin, Bishop remains as solid as an option as there is between the pipes. Dallas has the seventh-easiest strength of schedule the remainder of the season, which means Bishop should have some prime opportunities to rack up some wins.
29. C Aleksander Barkov, Florida Panthers (99% owned) - GP: 54 G: 17 A: 39 P: 56
Advice: Buy
Barkov hasn’t played well since the All-Star break, as the 24-year-old has just two points in the five games since. He could be a nice buy-low target if the Barkov owner in your fantasy league is frustrated. Florida also plays 14 games during the fantasy hockey playoffs, further adding to his value.
28. G Marc-Andre Fleury, Vegas Golden Knights (99% owned) - GP: 41 W: 21 GAA: 2.87 SV%: .904
Advice: Sell
If you have Fleury in your fantasy hockey league, you’ve likely been frustrated with his play for quite some time now. Since Dec. 10, he owns a save percentage of .889 which certainly is not what you expected. It’s probably wise to put out some feelers on Fleury to gauge what his value is to your league-mates. I wouldn’t force a trade, but if you can make do without him, don’t be afraid to make a deal.
27. C, RW Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars (99% owned) - GP: 57 G: 12 A: 30 P: 42
Advice: Buy
Seguin ended his 17-game goalless drought with a goal against the Maple Leafs, and hopefully, for his fantasy value, this is the first of many to come. He’s tied for ninth in the NHL with 205 shots this season but owns a brutal 5.9% shooting percentage - nearly five percent below his career average of 10.7%.
The window to buy-low on Seguin - who plays 14 games during the fantasy playoffs - should still be open in your league.
26. D Kris Letang, Pittsburgh Penguins (99% owned) - GP: 47 G: 12 A: 25 P: 37
Advice: Buy
If you really want to make a bold move and go after a top defenceman, Letang should be the guy you target. He won’t come easy, but he’s likely not going to disappoint either. Letang remains an elite offensive talent on the blueline and plays 14 games during the fantasy playoffs.
25. D Erik Karlsson, San Jose Sharks (99% owned) - GP: 55 G: 6 A: 34 P: 40
Advice: Hold
If you’ve held onto Karlsson for this long, it seems like you’re in for good. He’s been better lately with 12 points in his last 14 games, so the safe play here is keeping him around and hoping he continues to produce. He’s on pace to finish with a respectable 59 points this season.
24. D Brent Burns, San Jose Sharks (99% owned) - GP: 56 G: 12 A: 25 P: 37
Advice: Sell
Burns’ recent play should be enough to pique the interest of at least one of your league-mates. He’s piled on three goals and five points in his last five games. The reason why I am willing to sell Burns and hang onto Karlsson deals with the fact that the former has been much streakier than the latter. Burns has had two pointless streaks of four games or more while Karlsson has had zero.
23. RW Mikko Rantanen, Colorado Avalanche (99% owned) - GP: 40 G: 19 A: 20 P: 39
Advice: Buy
After back-to-back 80 point seasons, Rantanen hasn’t offered the performance many expected he would when they selected him within the first three rounds of their fantasy draft. He’s on pace for 64 points, which isn’t bad considering he’s missed 16 games this season.
In his last 14 contests though, he’s tallied just eight points. If you can get Rantanen and his 14-game fantasy hockey playoff schedule for a reasonable price, it’s certainly worth doing.
22. RW Mitchell Marner, Toronto Maple Leafs (99% owned) - GP: 47 G: 14 A: 44 P: 58
Advice: Hold
With 12 multi-point games since the start of December, Marner has more than made up for missed time earlier this season. The Leafs play a slightly below-average 13 games during the fantasy hockey playoffs, so his schedule isn’t a plus, but it’s also not a major negative.
21. LW, RW Patrik Laine, Winnipeg Jets (99% owned) - GP: 56 G: 24 A: 29 P: 53
Advice: Buy
Laine has already bested last year’s 50-point campaign, and he’s on pace to finish with 34 goals. The reason why I am targeting the Finnish forward is because of his position eligibility. Come playoff time, you’ll notice it really matters. He’s also heating up, as he’s racked up nine goals over his last 10 games.
