NHL betting: Canadiens were 30-to-1 to make Stanley Cup Final, and bettor put $5k on them

On May 29, the Montreal Canadiens won an overtime game to force Game 7 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

On May 30, one bettor might have made an incredible bet on the Canadiens.

The bettor took the Canadiens at 30-to-1 to reach the Stanley Cup Final at BetMGM. Considering the Maple Leafs were big favorites in Game 7, and Montreal had two series to go even if they beat Toronto, it was a heck of a bet.

Now that bettor is four wins away from making a small fortune.

Canadiens have made a fun run

On May 30, the bettor at BetMGM put $5,000 to win $150,000 on the Canadiens to win a series in the Stanley Cup semifinals and advance to the final round.

On May 31, the Canadiens upset the Maple Leafs, who were -200 favorites. Then the fun started. Montreal hasn't lost since.

The Canadiens were matched up against the Winnipeg Jets in the second round. The Canadiens had the longest Stanley Cup odds of any team left in the playoffs. The Jets were small favorites in the series. And Montreal swept the Jets. The Canadiens held Winnipeg to three goals in the final three games of the series.

Montreal will be underdogs in the next series too. But not 30-to-1 underdogs.

Can Montreal keep it going?

The NHL's playoff format this year was to have the top four teams from each of the top four divisions battle for spots in the Stanley Cup semifinals. The teams will then be reseeded for the semifinals.

Montreal was just 24-21-11 in the regular season, the worst record among the teams still left in the postseason. Therefore, the Canadiens will get either the Vegas Golden Knights or Colorado Avalanche next round, because either of those two teams would be the No. 1 seed.

The Canadiens are unlikely to beat either Vegas or Colorado. Their hope is that series, which Vegas leads 3-2 after a fantastic comeback from being down 0-2, goes seven games. Maybe those two teams take a lot out of each other, and the survivor is beat up emotionally and physically. Then Montreal can steal a game or two early in the series and advance.

It's a long shot, but the bettor holding a 30-to-1 ticket on them is apparently comfortable with Montreal as a long shot.
