NFL players vote Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill the best player in the league
Receiver Tyreek Hill, who has helped spearhead the transformation of the Dolphins’ offense into one of the NFL’s most explosive and prolific, on Friday evening was named the best player in the league in a vote of NFL players.
Hill finished first in NFL Network’s annual list of the top 100 players in football, as voted on by other players.
“God, thank you,” Hill said on the social media platform X. He followed that up with several more comments, including “coming back stronger.”
The remainder of the top five, from No. 2 to 5: Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson, San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett.
In voting, players were told to give weight to how players performed last season.
Hill, who finished seventh in balloting last season, became the first wide receiver to finish first in the top 100.
Last season, Hill led the league with 1,799 receiving yards (on 119 receptions) and 13 receiving touchdowns. But a late-season ankle injury torpedoed his mission to top Calvin Johnson’s single-season receiving yard record (1964).
Hill, 30, is the first receiver in NFL history to produced 1700 receiving yards in consecutive seasons.
Seven other Dolphins were named among the league’s top 100 players: Cornerback Jalen Ramsey (25), quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (36), running back Raheem Mostert (60), linebacker Bradley Chubb (62), wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (63), safety Jordan Poyer (65) and offensive tackle Terron Armstead (67).
Hill is the fourth non-quarterback to finish first since the poll began in 2011. The others: running back Adrian Peterson (2013), defensive end J.J. Watt (2015) and defensive tackle Aaron Donald (2019).
The Dolphins acquired Hill from the Chiefs for five draft picks, including a first-rounder, in 2022.
Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has had discussions with the Dolphins about a new contract that would boost his salary from the nearly $20 million he’s owed this season. Hill is due no guaranteed money after the 2024 season.
“My agent is doing his thing; I just had a conversation with him,” Hill said Thursday. “For right now, I’m going to keep practicing everyday and help this team win games.”
Hill has said he’s not worried about his contract situation and does not want to be traded.
