Jerry Jones: 'A lot to think about' regarding coaches, won't address Mike McCarthy

Jerry Jones is "very, very frustrated and upset."

The Dallas Cowboys are not playing in the NFL divisional playoff round this weekend following a disappointing loss to the sixth-seeded San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round. Discipline was a problem all season and the club is about to lose a plethora of top talent it can't afford to keep in free agency. In the simplest terms, Jones' club has once again given away its shot at a Super Bowl. And he's not happy about it.

"The bottom line is, yes, I'm very, very frustrated and upset that we've — you can call it COVID, you can call it anything — we have used up some very talented players over the last few years," Cowboys team owner Jones said on 105.3 The Fan on Friday.

Jones didn't have much to say about the coaching staff

Will Cowboys keep Mike McCarthy?

Jones said he hasn't completed an "overall evaluation and don't know when I will." He declined to comment on the coaching staff, following the path he first paved with reporters immediately after the loss.

"I'm not going to get into any conversations that I've had with anybody relative to anything to do with the staff," he told 105.3 The Fan. "I understand the interest in it, but there's nothing compelling me."

"I've got a lot to think about regarding these coaches," he added later. "I've got a lot to think about regarding scouts. I've got a lot to think about regarding various aspects of the organization."

He did say he had "everyone under contract that I want under contract."

In answering to a coaching change, Jones said one of his pet peeves is not addressing playing concerns within the season and instead waiting until the offseason. Any problems that present themselves in the first game should be taken care of immediately afterward, he said.

"I don't want to wait until we're sitting here with no season left to address these things we're doing or not doing," Jones said. "So all of that is in the mix here and a part of what I do."

The Cowboys hired McCarthy in January of 2020. They went 6-10 his first season and 12-5 en route to the No. 3 seed in the NFC this season.

Jones supportive of Dak Prescott

Jones was complimentary of quarterback Dak Prescott, who he said he believes can win a Super Bowl.

"I start right there with a big circle and a big plus. Future: Dak Prescott," Jones said.

"He's shown every time he's every gotten in a position, he's shown that he is a winner in football. Every time that he's every had a chance to (he does).

"It's hard to pinpoint the skill that makes it happen," Jones said. "It's hard to pinpoint that. But Dak Prescott has the skill to make it happen. We've got skill players, we've got (Ezekiel) Elliott has the skills to make it happen. We've got the offensive line talent to make it happen. We just have to get it right and get it going in the same direction."

Prescott, 28, threw for 4,449 yards and 37 touchdowns with a 104.2 quarterback rating.
